Culture & tradition

Who are the Black Masking Indians?

The Black Masking Indians are a historic African American tradition born in New Orleans in the 1800s. Created by free Black men as a form of celebration, resistance, and cultural expression, they sew magnificent suits by hand, adorned with vibrant beads, feathers, and symbols that honor African heritage, community, and pride. Today, this living tradition continues to be a powerful part of our culture and Carnival.
